Year 8 pupils have fun making iMovies at the Apple Store

As part of their ICT curriculum our Year 8 pupils went to the Apple store in Norwich this week. Having been welcomed by the staff with applause, they were put in pairs and given a Macbook Pro to share learning how to use Photobooth and iMovies to create videos containing clips and pictures.

Photobooth allows you to add background and distortions to create interesting photos. iMovies gives you the options to add themes, music titles and credits to your videos.

The pupils started of with taking various images of themselves with the P application which were uploaded onto iMovie to enable them to turn these into their own movie. They were also able to add sounds and songs to their movies. After making their final touches the Apple Store staff burned the results onto CDs, the results of which will be forwarded to the school in due course. Everyone was given a certificate for their iMovies project and did the conga on their way out of the store!

“we were welcomed by staff with applause”

“we made awesome videos of ourselves”

“The apple store downloaded our video onto discs so we have great memories to keep”

The Roaring 20s Jubilee Ball

280 guests attended Taverham Hall School’s 90th Jubilee Ball “The Roaring 20s” on Saturday 5th May.

During this spectacular evening guests were treated on arrival to a  welcome drinks reception on the crescent drive whilst a vintage Tiger Moth and classic ex-RAF Chipmunk plane flew up the drive and over the beautiful school grounds in formation. The school’s very own jazz pianist Jonathan Dodd and his Bass accompaniment, Nick Moore provided the intro during the reception whilst the evening’s music was provided by the world’s best travelling live band The Gypsy Queens, who have performed for celebrities such as David Beckham, Prince Harry, Elton John and H.R.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

1920s style photographs were taken by Debby Besford and caricaturist Peter Kavanagh provided a memento of the night for many. Much fun was had in the casino lounge where many guests tried their luck with some ‘fun money’.

Catering was provided by Bespoke at The Crown and the ball was organised with the assistance of Softley Events Management.

Funds generated from the ball during the auction, silent auction and raffle will support a number of projects which will directly enhance the experience and broaden the life of the pupils at Taverham Hall.

The school recognise just how much hard work has gone into the preparation for the ball and are deeply grateful to the Development Committee and the entire Ball Committee who have worked tirelessly in recent months.

The Roaring 20s has become an amazing memorable evening!

General Knowledge Quiz

After a creditable victory over Hethersett Old Hall the school’s quiz team entered the quarter final stage of the Eastern Region Schools’ Challenge.

The match versus a strong finishing Town Close team proved extremely tight and exciting. Up to 20 of the 30 minutes contest Taverham Hall were 10 points clear at 330-320 but just as we seemed likely to extend our lead two fantastic rounds by the visitors gained them a 100 points advantage from which we were unable to recover.

Taverham Hall’s team of Ben G, Ryan M, George C and Rhys PS all played with skill and enthusiasm and our special thanks go to joint captains Ben and George.

In the Autumn term we will be running a quiz hobby for our senior pupils so please come along and help us push onto the regional finals next year!

LINGUATRIVIA CHALLENGE

This year, most of our Year 7 pupils took part in the new National French Competition called “Linguatrivia” organised by Linguascope. The competition was rife as over 5,000 pupils took part nationally. On March 19th, pupils had to sit a 30 minute test consisting of 50 multiple choice questions on French grammar, vocabulary and cultural knowledge.

Linguatrivia Challenge was developed by Linguascope as a motivational, extra-curricular activity for pupils learning French as yet another way to help stimulate their interest in French whilst identifying and rewarding achievement on the part of the pupils. A full mark total of 100 points could be achieved by each pupil taking part.

Although our Year 7 pupils did not win one of the major prizes, 2 of our 19 candidates stood out with 85 points (James G) and 70 points (George C) - a fantastic achievement with James only missing out on one of the big prizes by only 1 point!

All participants have been awarded a certificate and received consolation prizes such as a vocabulary wheel, Eiffel Tower key chain and a badge. Well done to all the Year 7 pupils who took part! After all, “l’important, c’est de participer!” (Pierre de Coubertin).

Junior Art Hobby

In Junior Art Club the pupils have been examining the work of the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, who is particularly known for his use of vivid colours and bold brush strokes. You can have a look at some of their wonderful results below.

The children also looked at photographs and video clips of owls before making drawings with oil pastels. They were encouraged to look carefully at the details and add creative touches to make the bird and background their own. We were all really pleased with the results!

This is what the children had to say:

“I like Art club because it’s creative.”

“I really like all the ideas for the pictures we do.”

“I really liked it when we did the owl pictures in pastels. I think mine looks very colourful.”

“I like looking at all the pictures by famous artists. I enjoyed doing my Pointillist picture of a waterfall.”

“I didn’t know that Van Gogh had painted so many pictures! I’m really pleased with my painting of Starry Night.”

Sport Relief Mile

Staff and pupils turned out en masse to support Sport Relief and run a mile. The four houses were coordinated by house staff into themes; we had the crows dressed all in black with various crow-like additions, we had the green house of Wrens all in green, we had Hawks looking resplendent in the 118-118 red and white, but the winners of the day were undoubtedly Owls who ran the mile in the theme of Noah’s Ark. Lead by a number of ‘Noahs’ the ark was indeed made up of a variety of animals; two by two – hurrah!

Congratulations to pupils and staff for their efforts in getting through the mile. The pace was set by speedsters George C and Felix, with George H and Mr Hamilton nor far behind. Mr Wood ran several miles in his efforts to keep his 118 team together to the finish!

Over £250 was raised to support this very worthwhile charity. Many thanks to the grounds team, the gap students and to Mrs Golden for the photos – all of which are on display in the Outer Hall.

Crows’ Winning House Supper

Crows were the worthy victors of the Spring Term, determined by the number of reds, conduct reds and subject commendations across the school. We were delighted also to welcome representatives from each of the other houses, who made speeches congratulating the winners! Mr and Mrs Crossley were also on hand to help with arrangements and celebrate the winning house. Many thanks to the Catering team, who prepared a special meal in the drawing room, which we followed with a number of table-games and, overall, a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Mr Hamilton’s impression of a crow, dressed in his best ‘white tie’ will stay with us all from some time! Great to have such supportive staff; Miss Chapman, Mrs Rust, Matron Ives, and Mr Gorham all joined in and helped make the evening such fun.

World Spelling Day and Spelling Bee Competitions

World Spelling Day

On 6th March, the school celebrated World Spelling Day by having the opportunity to take part in an online spelling competition against children all over the world. A number of our pupils took part in this with the following pupils proving to be very successful in this competition:

Age 3-7          Oliver L (379 points)

Age 8-10        Anna G (194 Points)

Age 11-13      Yuri K (530 points)

The winners were awarded certificates and prizes for their excellent achievements.

House Spelling Bee Competition

This closely contested competition made its return at the end of the Easter term, after it was received by the children with great enthusiasm last year. The finals were nail biters again, with the contestants fighting right until the end to be crowned the winner of the “House Spelling Bee” competition for their year group. The winners were as follows:

Year 3: James B
Year 4: Alice M
Year 5: Thomas B
Year 6: Alfie E
Year 7: George C
Year 8: Samuel B

There were some extremely difficult words in these finals and all the finalists did very well to hold their nerve and manage to spell such difficult words in front of a large audience.

Owls were the eventual over all Spelling Bee winners, just beating Crows, last year’s winners.

Times Spelling Bee Competition

At the end of the Easter term, George C, team captain, James G, Rhys PS and Miriam W represented the school by taking part in the National Times Spelling Bee Competition. Although the team prepared well for this competition and tried very hard, they did not manage to gain quite enough points to go through to the next round in this occassion.

World Book Day 1st March

On 1st March the school celebrated World Book Day by carrying out a DEAR – Drop Everything and Read. All teachers and pupils at Taverham Hall stopped what they were doing from 11:10 – 11:25 to read for 15 minutes. This new initiative was introduced a year ago and has proved to be a real hit with everyone!
