Looking for Mini-Beasts and Creepy Crawlies

Nursery 1 children have been looking at mini-beasts and spring animals this week, spending the fine, dry days, exploring the woods for bugs and creepy crawlies, armed with pots and magnifying glasses. There has been lots of excitement, as the children dig and turn over logs, looking for the mini-beasts that live in the woods.

They have also been looking at and making bumble bees, ladybirds, butterflies and lambs, which have been turned into a colourful display, filling the room with lots of colour, together with the flowers they made in the previous week.

Tadpoles

After collecting tadpoles from our pond, the Nursery children have been learning all about frogs and their life cycles.  They have been caring for the tadpoles and catching them in magnifying cups to study them up close.   We have been acting out the song “5 speckled frogs” and explored some very yucky, messy green gloop.  We had great fun in making some lovely frog shaped biscuits.  To practice our numbers and maths the children joined in with a throwing and counting activity, throwing the correct number of frogs into the correct numbered bucket.

The children have demonstrated some excellent ICT skills, by drawing their own favourite bugs on the computer, worms and ladybirds where the favourites.  After a lovely walk through the woods the children created their own bluebell pictures.

The Roaring 20s Jubilee Ball

280 guests attended Taverham Hall School’s 90th Jubilee Ball “The Roaring 20s” on Saturday 5th May.

During this spectacular evening guests were treated on arrival to a  welcome drinks reception on the crescent drive whilst a vintage Tiger Moth and classic ex-RAF Chipmunk plane flew up the drive and over the beautiful school grounds in formation. The school’s very own jazz pianist Jonathan Dodd and his Bass accompaniment, Nick Moore provided the intro during the reception whilst the evening’s music was provided by the world’s best travelling live band The Gypsy Queens, who have performed for celebrities such as David Beckham, Prince Harry, Elton John and H.R.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.

1920s style photographs were taken by Debby Besford and caricaturist Peter Kavanagh provided a memento of the night for many. Much fun was had in the casino lounge where many guests tried their luck with some ‘fun money’.

Catering was provided by Bespoke at The Crown and the ball was organised with the assistance of Softley Events Management.

Funds generated from the ball during the auction, silent auction and raffle will support a number of projects which will directly enhance the experience and broaden the life of the pupils at Taverham Hall.

The school recognise just how much hard work has gone into the preparation for the ball and are deeply grateful to the Development Committee and the entire Ball Committee who have worked tirelessly in recent months.

The Roaring 20s has become an amazing memorable evening!

A New Climbing Frame and Easter Activities

Taverham Hall Friends have very kindly raised money to provide the Nursery with a fantastic climbing frame.  You can see from the children’s faces below, just how excited and happy they were to get this brilliant new equipment that is encouraging their imaginative play and physical development.

Nursery 2 all went on a fantastic trip to Norwich Castle museum to link in with their topic on Castles, Knights and Princesses.  The children were shown around the castle by a museum educator who provided them with stories, activities and guidance.  In the main hall the children were fascinated by the extremely deep well where they all dropped a penny down and made a wish.  The children attempted to make a stone arch, chisel away at the castle walls, dressed up in costume and saw some real knights before exploring the rest of the museum.  The children also really enjoyed looking at all the stuffed animals in the gallery. We had a fantastic day and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.  A special thank you to all the parents that joined in with the fun .

Children in Nursery all really enjoy books, reading them themselves, to one another or being read to by the teachers.

The children all built a sturdy wall in which their Humpty Dumpty egg was carefully balanced on top.  The children then used the electronic Bee Bot to knock the egg off the wall.  They programmed the Bee Bot with a series of commands to move in the correct direction.  It was lucky that the eggs had been hard boiled!

David Brown, one of the groundsmen and a familiar face to the Nursery children, came to talk to the children about the chickens he looks after at school.  He read the children a story explaining a chicken’s life cycle then took us into the woods where we visited the four Taverham Hall chickens.  The children listened carefully as David explained how to look after them and what we could do to help.  After our time with David we paid a visit to the newly hatched chicks that Reception children had been looking after.  We all took great care to hold the chicks carefully and gently.

Pre-Prep and Nursery Dance Display

This year’s Dance Display followed the story of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and played to capacity audiences over two days. Led by their dance teacher Mrs Chamberlin, Pre-Prep and Nursery 2 children danced with great enthusiasm, confidence and evident enjoyment.

Laura was brilliant as Dorothy, ably supported by George as Toto, Jack as the tin man, Farren as the scarecrow and Joseph as the lion. Frightening and truly scary with her green face, Theonee excelled as the wicked witch of the North, whilst Ivy radiated kindness as the good fairy.

Year 2 boys were the wicked witch’s guards and the Year 2 girls were the rainbow people, ably supported by the younger girls who attend the After School Club Fun Dance sessions.

Year 1 children took the parts of the people from the Emerald City, whilst Reception and Nursery children were the Munchkins, led by an imperious Edward as the Great Oz.

Pre-Prep and Nursery 2 children all have a dance lesson once a week and the display is the culmination of a great deal of hard work on their part, inspired by their dance teacher Mrs Chamberlin.

The costumes for the Dance Display were truly outstanding and we are very grateful to those Year 2 parents who made costumes.

BBC Bird Watch and Building Snow Men

The children in Nursery two have been taking part in the BBC Bird Watch.  They have all made binoculars and have been learning about the different birds, their calls and habits before we ventured out into the grounds to spot them.  We even heard the sound of the local woodpecker and a buzzard, as well as finding the hundreds of nesting crows by the tennis courts and owl boxes along the woodland trail. The girls and boys explored the grounds and collected natural materials to take back to the classroom and create their own birds nest with.

We have all been taking full advantage of the snow this month, enjoying building snowmen and throwing snowballs, we even built an igloo (or attempted to).  We walked through the woods where we followed animal tracks of deer, rabbits and birds, we found a quiet space where we all sat and listened to the snow dripping off the trees.  The children all had great fun making their own snow angel and comparing sizes with their friends.  They all enjoyed the snow but when back in the classroom we all warmed up with a cup of hot chocolate -all choosing their favourite story books and reading them to their friends!

Father Christmas visits the Nursery and Pre Prep!

On 15 December a very special visitor came to see our Nursery and Pre Prep children. Father Christmas came to see the children in Nursery 2 in the morning. He told them how busy he was and asked them to tell their parents not to leave out too many mince pies as he was getting very fat! He then gave each child a present and asked what they would like for Christmas.

In the afternoon the Pre Prep children had their Christmas party and enjoyed playing a variety of games as well as a sumptuous tea kindly provided by their parents. At the end of the party Father Christmas arrived and handed out presents to every child. He reminded the children that they needed to go to bed early on Christmas Eve as he would be very busy!

A lovely day and happy and excited faces everywhere!

Nursery Nativity Play

The Nursery Nativity play was another success and enjoyed by the children, their parents and staff.

This year the children put on a fantastic nativity performance. With the help of the Year 2 children and their teachers Miss Nichols and Mrs Knight, we had brilliant narrators re-telling the Christmas Nativity story.  Mr Dodd provided the music while the children all joined in with the words and actions, singing clearly and loudly – much to his delight!

Praise needs to be given to the parents for the costumes, the staff for their dedication and cheers during the rehearsals and play, but not forgetting the children who practiced very hard and delivered a brilliant performance that made your heart melt.

Have a look at some of their lovely moments:

Christmas Lunch Moments……….

On Tuesday 13 December Pre Prep and Nursery children enjoyed a delicious Christmas dinner. The dining hall looked very festive with all the decorations, red and green napkins and crackers, kindly provided by the dinner ladies.

The children had all had great fun earlier in the morning designing and making their own party hats. Everyone enjoyed a turkey dinner but by special request the pudding was slices of chocolate gateau with ice-cream stars!
